The trial toggle is not in settings. It is not in Professional Dashboard. It is not somewhere in your profile you have missed.
It lives inside the reel you are about to post, on the final screen, and it appears while you are creating. If you are hunting for it anywhere else, you will keep not finding it.
Here is where every part of this feature sits, including the results screen most people never open.
Where the toggle is when you post
- Open Instagram and tap + to create
- Choose Reel and build it the way you always do, audio, cover, clips
- Tap Next to get to the final sharing screen, the one with the caption box
- Look under the caption field for Trial reel
- Flip it on
- Tap Share
That is the whole thing. The toggle sits on the same screen as your caption, your tags, and your sharing options, and it is easy to scroll past because it looks like every other row on that screen.
Two things change the moment you turn it on. Your followers will not see the reel. The caption box behaves normally, so write the caption the way you would for a real post, because this reel can go to your followers later without a rewrite.
Where finished trials live afterward
This is where people get stuck. The trial posted, the follower feed stayed clean, and now the reel appears to be gone.
It is in your profile, in the reels tab, marked as a trial. Tap in and you get a results view showing how the reel performed with non followers: views, likes, comments, shares. That screen is the entire reason the feature exists, and most people never look at it.
You get two choices from there. Share it to your followers, which turns it into a normal reel on your grid. Or leave it, let it stay off your feed, and take the data.
Instagram will also prompt you after a trial has been running, offering to share the ones that performed. Do not let the prompt make the decision for you. Open the numbers yourself.
What to look at on the results screen
Views is the number everyone stares at and the least useful one on the screen.
A trial gets pushed to non followers, so views tell you the algorithm distributed it. That is delivery, not interest. The signal you want is what people did after they watched.
Look at saves and shares first. A save means someone wants it later. A share means someone put their own name on it in front of their friends. Those two are the strongest signals Instagram has that a piece of content is worth pushing further, and they are the two that predict whether a reel keeps going after the trial window.
Then look at comments, then likes.
Compare across trials rather than against some benchmark you read somewhere. Run four or five trials on the same theme, and the one that pulls double the shares of the others is telling you something real about your audience. That is the reel to send to your followers, and that is the hook worth writing three more of.
I break down what to do with those signals in the 6 component viral framework.
If the toggle is not there at all
You are looking in the right place and the row does not exist. A few reasons why.
Account type. Trials run on professional accounts, creator or business. Personal accounts do not get the option.
Follower threshold. Instagram gated this feature by account size at launch and has moved that line more than once. Small accounts often see nothing.
App version. An out-of-date app hides features that shipped in newer builds. Update, force close, reopen.
Content that disqualifies the reel. Certain audio, certain formats, and anything flagged during upload can pull the option off that screen.
Rollout timing. Meta ships features in waves. Two accounts of the same size in the same country can see different screens for weeks.
I wrote a full checklist for this at why your trial reels are not showing up. Work through it in order before you conclude your account is broken.
The mistake that wastes the whole feature
People find the toggle, run trials for a week, watch the view counts, and get discouraged because the numbers look lower than their regular reels.
Of course they do. Your followers are not in the audience. You are looking at cold reach only, which is the hardest audience in the app to move, and that is the exact reason the data is worth having.
A reel that pulls saves and shares from strangers is a reel that works without the goodwill of people who already like you. That is the one to put in front of your followers. That is the one to build a series from.
Trials are a testing tool. If you are running them to get views, you have the wrong job in mind for the feature. For the difference in how each one behaves, see trial reels vs regular reels.
A workflow that makes this worth your time
Finding the toggle takes ten seconds. Getting value out of it takes a system.
- Write four hooks on the same topic
- Trial all four across a few days
- Ignore views, rank them by shares and saves
- Post the winner to your followers
- Write three more variations of the winning hook
- Trial those
Six weeks of that and you stop guessing at hooks. You have your own data on what your specific audience responds to, built from cold traffic, which is the only test that counts.
Want your reels to be worth trialing?
Book a strategy call and we will look at your last thirty reels, what your hooks have in common, and where the drop happens.
Testing a weak hook faster gets you weak results faster. Fix the content, then let the trials tell you which version wins.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the trial reel option on Instagram?
On the final sharing screen when you create a reel, below the caption box, labeled Trial reel. It is not in settings or the Professional Dashboard.
Where do trial reels go after I post them?
To your profile’s reels tab, marked as a trial, with a results screen showing how it performed with non followers. Your followers do not see it in their feed.
Why can I not find trial reels on my account?
Common causes: a personal rather than professional account, an account below Instagram’s follower threshold, an outdated app version, content that disqualifies the reel, or a rollout that has not reached you yet.
Can I see the results of a trial reel?
Yes. Open the trial from your profile and you get views, likes, comments, and shares from non followers. Saves and shares are the numbers worth ranking by.
How do I share a trial reel with my followers later?
Open the trial in your profile and choose to share it. It becomes a normal reel on your grid, with the caption you already wrote.
Do trial reels show up on my profile grid?
They sit in your reels tab flagged as trials, visible to you. They do not go to your followers’ feeds unless you share them.
How many views should a trial reel get?
There is no universal number and chasing one wastes the tool. Compare trials against each other on your own account and rank by shares and saves rather than views.
