When someone asks Google, ChatGPT, or Perplexity a question your business can answer, the AI builds its reply from a handful of sources and names them. Answer engine optimization is the work of being one of those sources: content shaped as clear, direct answers, structured so a machine can quote it and a person can trust it. In September, Google’s AI quoted this site 32,000 times. The method that did it is the method I run for clients.
This site’s own Search Console data, September 2026. The August breakdown, including which pages the AI quotes, is in Cited by Google AI 22,000 Times in One Month.
All SEO is answer engine search now. AI is doing most of the searching, and it will keep taking more of it. The only question left is whether the answer quotes you.
Search optimization has split into three jobs, and this page covers the newest one. The other two have their own pages, because the work is different even though the destination is the same.
Keyword research, on-page and off-page work, content, and links, so your pages rank when people search the classic way. Still the base layer: a page that never ranks never gets cited either.
Content built as direct answers to the questions your buyers ask, structured with headings, steps, schema, and FAQs a machine can lift a clean quote from. The AI reads it, trusts it, and names you.
Clean site architecture, fast load times, Core Web Vitals, mobile-first layouts, and schema markup, built into every site from day one. A site a crawler cannot read is invisible to search and to AI alike.
Search SEO gets you on the page. Technical SEO makes sure the machines can read you. Answer engine SEO gets you chosen as the answer, and that is where all three are heading.
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your content the source that AI answer engines pull from: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and voice assistants. The fundamentals are the ones SEO always had, authoritative content that answers your audience’s questions. What changed is the delivery. People ask, the AI answers, and the sources it names get the authority, the brand exposure, and the clicks that still happen.
Google puts an AI answer at the top of the page for a growing share of queries, and a whole generation asks ChatGPT and Perplexity first. If your marketing plan still treats Google as ten blue links, you are optimizing for a version of search that is disappearing in front of you.
People read the answer and leave. On this site, one in seven search appearances in August was inside an AI answer. If you are in the answer, you get the authority and the high-intent clicks. If you are outside it, you get neither.
The AI does not quote the cleverest writer. It quotes the clearest answer from a source it trusts. Shallow, unstructured, or outdated content gets skipped.
Most businesses have not changed how they write. Their content stays vague, brand-first, and unquotable, and they will slowly go invisible in both kinds of search. The businesses building answer-shaped content own the citations, the authority, and the clicks that still exist.
The three pages the AI quotes most on this site have the same shape: question in the title, answer in the first hundred words, every subtopic under its own heading phrased the way people search, and an FAQ at the bottom that asks the literal questions and answers them in two sentences. The method is that shape, applied to your market.
AI answers questions, so the content answers questions. I research what people ask in your industry, the pain points and gaps, and which queries trigger AI answers in your niche, then build the pieces that answer them: complete guides, how-to walkthroughs, comparisons, and FAQ sections that address the specific query.
Answer up front, numbered steps, labeled sections for the edge cases. Then the structured data that tells the machine what it is reading: FAQ, How-To, Article, Review, Organization, and Product schema, whichever the page calls for.
Google’s systems, and by extension the AI, prefer credible sources. Author bios and credentials, cited sources, earned backlinks, brand mentions across the web, consistent expert-level publishing, and real reviews on the page.
The featured snippet is the gateway to the AI answer. Direct answers of 40 to 60 words, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, step-by-step instructions, and clean definitions, placed where the machine looks for them.
AI understands context, synonyms, and meaning, so the writing is conversational and complete: the whole topic, the related concepts, the subtopics, in plain language instead of keyword stuffing.
Different engines pull from different sources. Articles for depth, video for YouTube and the video-aware engines, podcasts for voice, social posts for brand mentions, all pointing back at the same answers.
I would rather show you the report than the pitch. This is August 2026 for lesliemlyon.com, pulled from Search Console and analytics.
One in every seven times the site showed up in search, it was as a cited source inside an AI answer. Search appearances were up 23 percent on July, clicks up 30 percent, sessions up 68 percent, from a content system one person runs with a plan.
None of the three is a hot take or a personal essay. Each answers one specific question a real person types into Google, in plain language, with steps and screenshots. The step-by-step guide alone was quoted 11,772 times in the month.
The catch, because there is one. Being quoted 32,000 times did not send 32,000 visitors. An AI answer often satisfies the reader on the results page, and in August this site’s click rate sat at 0.71 percent. What citations buy is authority that compounds, a name stitched into thousands of answers in your niche, and the high-intent searchers who still click, because the AI can answer the small question and cannot deliver the service.
What you publish now, what the AI already quotes, what it skips, and why.
The questions your audience asks, mapped to the content that will answer each one completely.
New answer-shaped pieces, and existing content restructured so it can be quoted.
Structured data on every page that needs it, so the machines know what they are reading.
Author credentials, citations, earned links, and brand mentions that make you a source worth trusting.
Pages built to hold position zero, the gateway to the AI answer.
AI citations from Search Console, snippet rankings, branded search, direct traffic, and the conversions behind them, reported monthly.
The engines change every month. The plan gets tested, measured, and refined with them.
Industries where the results show fastest, because people ask the AI these questions all day: healthcare, legal, financial services, education and training, home services, e-commerce, B2B services, and real estate.
Want your content cited
instead of skipped?
Book a strategy call and I will look at what you publish now, which questions in your market are going unanswered, and what it would take for the AI answers in your niche to start quoting you.
The citation work, in writing: the numbers, the method, and the two pages the AI quotes most.
The practice of making your content the source that AI answer engines pull from and cite: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and voice assistants. It uses the fundamentals of SEO and changes the shape of the content so a machine can quote it.
AEO is the next stage of SEO rather than a replacement for it. Search SEO gets a page ranked, technical SEO makes it readable, and answer engine work gets it quoted. The content that wins citations also wins classic search, so the work is done together. The SEO page covers the ranking side.
When Google’s AI builds an answer at the top of the results page, it lists the pages it pulled from as sources. Each time your page appears as one of those sources, that is a citation. Search Console now reports these appearances.
Search Console reports AI answer appearances inside your search performance data. This site showed 22,600 in August 2026, 13.7 percent of all its search appearances, and 32,000 in September. Connecting Search Console and analytics to every property is the first step of every engagement.
Less than a normal ranking does. Many people read the AI answer and never click. The value is authority and reach: your site gets woven into thousands of answers, and the higher-intent searchers still click through, because the AI cannot deliver what you sell.
Direct answers to specific questions. Clear structure, the answer up front, numbered steps, headings phrased the way people search, and FAQ sections a machine can lift clean quotes from. Hot takes and brand essays get skipped.
The first citations usually show within a few months of publishing answer-shaped content, and they compound from there as the engines learn to trust the source. Plan on a quarter before judging it, and a year before it is a moat.
Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode first, because that is where the volume is and where Search Console reports it. The same content gets picked up by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Bing Copilot, and voice search, and I track brand mentions across them.
